How to get from Penang Airport to George Town
Compare bus 401E, Grab, airport taxis and private transfers, and choose the right George Town drop-off for your accommodation.

For most arrivals at Penang International Airport (PEN), the decision is simple:
- Take Rapid Penang 401E if you are travelling light, cost matters most and your accommodation is convenient for KOMTAR or Weld Quay.
- Take Grab if you want a quoted app fare and a direct ride to your door.
- Take an airport taxi if you prefer not to use an app.
- Pre-book a private transfer when you need a particular vehicle, confirmed child seat, mobility assistance or an arranged meeting point.
The airport is at Bayan Lepas, south of George Town. Grab’s airport guide gives an approximate George Town journey of 18 km and 35 minutes, although actual road time depends on the destination and traffic (Grab’s Penang airport guide).
Options at a glance
| Option | Indicative cost | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rapid Penang 401E | Distance-based bus fare | Light luggage; stays near KOMTAR or Weld Quay | Slower and no hotel drop-off |
| Grab | Grab publishes an approximate RM30–45 average | A direct ride with an upfront app quote | Fare and availability can vary |
| Airport taxi | Fixed by destination zone, according to Penang’s visitor portal | Travellers who do not want an app | Check the current fare on arrival |
| Pre-booked transfer | Varies by operator and vehicle | Special requirements or larger groups | Advance coordination; often dearer |
Transport details and prices can change. Treat the live app quote, bus information and taxi price offered at the airport as definitive.
Bus 401E: the budget option for central George Town
Rapid Penang route 401E runs between Balik Pulau and Weld Quay via Penang International Airport, Queensbay, KOMTAR and other stops. The operator currently lists a 15–20-minute route frequency (Rapid Penang service information), while its detailed route page confirms that the airport, KOMTAR and Terminal A Weld Quay are on the route (401E route and live bus map).
Because the airport is an intermediate stop, the published first and last trips from the route termini are not airport departure times. The listed frequency is also not a promise that a bus will reach the airport within that interval. Check the live route page after landing, especially in the evening.
There is one important directional detail: 401E continues beyond the airport in both directions. Confirm that the bus is heading toward Weld Quay, not toward Balik Pulau.
For cash payment, Rapid Penang tells passengers to check the fare information at the stop and carry the exact fare because the farebox does not give change. Keep the ticket issued after payment (Rapid Penang fare guidance). Small ringgit notes and coins are therefore useful on arrival.
The route makes many stops. Choose it for low cost rather than a tightly timed transfer, and allow for an onward walk or local ride from central George Town.
KOMTAR or Weld Quay?
KOMTAR is usually the more useful stop for accommodation around Magazine Road, Prangin Mall, Jalan Penang and the southern or western side of the heritage area. Penang’s visitor portal also identifies KOMTAR as the central transfer terminal for buses around Penang Island (Penang360 transport guide).
Weld Quay, listed as Terminal A Weld Quay, suits the eastern side of central George Town: for example, stays near Beach Street, the waterfront or the eastern side of Little India.
Neither choice should be made from a neighbourhood name alone. Check the walking route from the stop to the exact accommodation entrance before flying; a short map distance may still be inconvenient with luggage or in heavy rain.
Grab: the straightforward door-to-door option
Book after collecting your luggage and when you are ready to go to the pickup point. Grab lists the pickup location for international arrivals as Penang International Airport – Level 1 Multilevel Car Park E-Hailing Pickup Point. Follow the current in-app directions and airport signs; passengers arriving domestically should likewise use the location shown in the app rather than assume the same meeting point.
Grab publishes an approximate RM30–45 average price, 35-minute journey and 18 km distance between George Town and the airport. These are planning estimates, not an airport tariff. The app displays the applicable quote before booking (Grab’s Penang airport guide).
Vehicle capacity matters as much as passenger count. Grab describes JustGrab as suitable for up to four passengers with two checked bags. Its six-seater option takes up to six passengers, or four with additional luggage. If everyone has a large case, select the vehicle based on both people and bags.
Enter the hotel or complete street address, not simply “George Town”. A stay around Armenian Street or Weld Quay is a different destination from Gurney Drive, Pulau Tikus or Air Itam.
Airport taxi: useful if you do not want an app
Penang’s visitor information portal says airport taxis use a coupon system, with fares fixed between the airport and destination zones (Penang360 transport guide). Use the official taxi arrangement available in the terminal, give the precise hotel or street address and confirm the current fare and accepted payment method before proceeding.
This is a practical fallback if mobile data fails, the e-hailing wait is long or you prefer to arrange the journey with airport staff. Do not plan around an old fare quoted on a blog or forum; check the live price when you arrive.
When a pre-booked transfer makes sense
A private transfer is generally unnecessary for an ordinary arrival, but advance booking can be useful when you need:
- a child seat confirmed before travel;
- a van with stated passenger and luggage capacity;
- mobility assistance;
- a named meeting point or assistance finding the vehicle;
- a direct journey to accommodation outside central George Town.
Before paying, confirm the total fare, vehicle capacity, meeting instructions, cancellation terms and waiting-time policy in writing. If the flight is delayed, establish whether the operator monitors the flight and how long the driver will wait.
A practical arrival plan
Before flying, save your accommodation’s full address and map pin. If considering the bus, check whether KOMTAR or Weld Quay leaves the easier final walk.
After landing:
- Collect your luggage and obtain small Malaysian ringgit notes and coins if taking the bus.
- Check the live 401E route information and confirm the bus is going toward Weld Quay.
- Compare the likely wait and onward walk with the current Grab quote.
- For Grab, follow the pickup point shown in the app and on airport signs.
- For a taxi, use the official airport arrangement and confirm the fare first.
For one lightly packed traveller who is not in a hurry, 401E is the economical choice. For several people sharing the fare—or anyone arriving tired, late or with substantial luggage—a direct car is usually the more practical trade-off.
